DisplayPort Video Cards are Coming

DataPro News > Technical Info
August 01, 2007

Hot on the heels of Samsung's announcement of a DisplayPort LCD display, ATI has revealed plans for a DisplayPort video card. This card should be available in early 2008, just in time for Samsung's monitor.

It's looking like VESA may achieve its goal of replacing DVI and VGA with the DisplayPort video standard in PCs. ATI has announced that their "Shanghai" R700 FireGL video cards will utilize DisplayPort 1.1 connectivity.

The DisplayPort-equipped FireGL cards are scheduled for release in early 2008, which matches nicely with the Q2 2008 release date for the Samsung DisplayPort LCD monitor.

Samsung and ATI embrace DisplayPort

FireGL is ATI's workstation graphics card line, targeted at professional users. There's no word yet on whether their consumer-grade Radeon line will also be available with DisplayPort output.

Update: Nvidia has also promised to deliver DisplayPort video cards by CES 2008.
