American-style Wall Plates (also known as Switch Covers or Outlet Covers) are typically a standard height (4.5" - 11.43cm), and come in a range of widths, measured in "gangs." For example a single light switch or outlet would be "single gang," while a two or three unit would be two-gang or three-gang.
Gang plates are made to fit one of three sizes of screw hole spacing:
Box Mount:
Attaches directly to a Gang Box.Mounting hole spacing is 3.281" (8.33cm).
Strap/Decora Mount:
Attaches to an intermediary component such as a Decora style insert that attaches to the Gang BoxMounting hole spacing is 3.812" (9.68cm).
Device/Light Switch Mount:
Attaches to an intermediary component such as a light switch that attaches to the Gang BoxMounting hole spacing is 2.375" (6.03cm).
Multi-gang mount spacing:
In 2-gang, 3-gang, and larger configurations, mounting holes are located 1.81" (4.57cm) horizontally apart.
